What the press has said about Tim's debut album "Valcour"

Complete Downbeat Review (March '08)

"Drummer, keyboardist and vibraphonist Tim Collins' debut as a leader benefits greatly from his own playing, as well as that of trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and drummer Simon Lott. But far from a reason to simply blow chops, Valcour is an adventure in thoughtful, probing composition, excellent interaction, and the meaning of "group dynamic.

Collins' vibraphone style, which is pleasant, mature and full bodied, is nonetheless the least important thing on his agenda. His sextet plays with a rare degree of empathy in songs that run the gamut stylistically, but with a successful focus on cohesive teamwork, that is nothing less than exemplary.

The album begins with a flash of blinding light in "Buzzy John's Blues", followed by an ethereal E.S.P.ish "Twentysomething" and a tumultuous reworking of the Police's "Every Little Thing She Does is Magic".

Valcour puts one in mind of those old Pablo LP sessions with Milt Jackson and Mickey Roker: No one seems to be in a hurry to get anywhere fast, they are having too much of a ball just taking the ride." - Ken Micallef (Downbeat March '08)

"This is one of the best vibraphonists that I've heard in years. Tim's musical creativity really shines through, not to mention Tim and the group having brought a refreshing new sound to the table for us to partake of." - Leon Reyes KVMR 89.5 FM Nevada City/Sacramento Ca Host: Leon's Jazz In A Box

"Collins is an exciting player who chooses only to flash his energy in certain spots…those moments are what makes this…impressive disc worthwhile." - Jonathan Widran, All Music Guide

"With his sextet, Collins…often interweaves his phrasings with trumpeter Ingrid Jensen and pianist Aaron Parks…this is a well-rounded session, enamored by a divergent and upbeat track mix. Collins' talents shine radiantly here." - Glenn Astarita, Ejazznews.com

"An enjoyable album, with plenty of variety in styles and moods" - Tony Augarde, BBC

"…superb original compositions with very fine musicianship from the leader Tim Collins…" - Barry O'Sullivan, Producer/Presenter of "A Jazz Hour" across Australia

"…we really love your stunning sophisticated Jazz, your style is powerful, evocative and very subtle. The choice of material backed up with a smooth cooking band is marvelous and gels together into a lush sound that has you wanting more and our audiences most certainly will love your sound. It certainly struck us as an extraordinary cd one that will be very well received by our astute audience." - Peter Merrett, PBS-FM Australia

"Tim Collins makes a strong argument that he's ready to lead on his debut Valcour. His songs are strong and draw from many musical streams with influences as diverse as Bobby Hutcherson and the Police. His playing on vibes is reminiscent of Gary Burton's work with Chick Corea." - Lester French, WMEB-FM

"Nice debut from a talented vibraphonist" - David R. Adler, jazz journalist

"Excellent!" - Bill King, eJazznews.com

"This recording…is the perfect platform for the multi talented Mr. Collins to express his musical skills, aided and abetted by some superb musicians, playing a series of new compositions full of excellent rhythms and melody. The arrangements are sharp and pacey and the entire CD is full of highly listenable music. Well done to all who collaborated on this, terrific work." - John Reid, 102.8 FM, SCOTLAND
